We're Kelly and Matt from San Diego, California. We love travel and really fell in love with each other while traveling. Since early in our relationship, we both wanted to live abroad and, since getting married in 2015, that wanderlust has only grown stronger. For 2018, we were finally able to put our dream into motion as we have embarked on spending a year on foreign soils, seeing and tasting as much of the world as we can while working as digital nomads for our very understanding employers.
I'm the researching, budgeting, planning, spreadsheet-making analytical brains behind the pair. Before I met Kelly, I had traveled to several countries and found that my detailed planning style paid dividends in lowered costs but also higher value, especially by avoiding areas that most would call tourist traps. I currently work remotely for a couple venture-backed start-up companies and am thrilled to have the opportunity to 'digitally commute' while traveling.
I'm always thinking creatively and looking for the next 'life changing' meal. As a published author and award winning filmmaker I find knowing the history, legends and myths behind locations we visit to be far more intriguing than taking a photo with Matt and then running off to the next destination. I want to feel the essence of a place in my bones so that years from now I can still recall the scents, sounds and scenery. I also work as a digital nomad and enjoy the freedom it gives us to go on micro-adventures in between work projects.
We both grew up as fans of Star Trek - and the phrase "to boldly go where no man has gone before" fueled our wanderlust spirit as children. Boldly Go Travel was conjured from this sense of exploration and adventure. As adults, we have now traveled to over twelve countries together (Kelly - 30 countries before turning 30; and Matt - 20). Now, our mission has changed - we have left our life of comfort for a year, seeking out new experiences in locations we have never visited. We boldly go...and will report our encounters here.

Why hello there. How nice of you to stop by! Thanks so much for spending some of your time hanging out with us in this virtual world. You are awesome!
If you would like to get in contact with us about anything, please feel free to drop us an email. We love hearing from our readers and will do our best to respond to every message we receive as promptly as possible.
Please keep in mind that we often travel to remote and developing destinations, and may go a few days or more without internet. Please be patient if you don’t hear back the same day.
“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.”

hot take: A spendy treat, a microlight flight is the perfect antidote to the crowds of Angkor. (4.0 stars)
pro tip: Book in the morning to avoid the strong winds mid-day and email directly to get a discount.
hot take: The Angkor complex, including Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm, is a bucket list worth destination, but expect to suffer the elements (heat and crowds) for your photographic reward. (4.0 stars)
pro tip: Explore early to avoid the worst of the heat and the tour bus crowds…also visit the Angkor National Museum before you go for some much-needed context and history (in the comfort of AC)
hot take: Not a bad place for a long layover, Kuala Lumpur is a bit too commercial while lacking the polish of a true modern metropolis. (2.5 stars)
pro tip: Traffic is a real killer in KL, but the trains are excellent (and cheap), so choose lodging with easy access to the downtown area.
hot take: While not a ‘must-see’ highlight, we enjoyed our time in rural Vietnam getting a glimpse of life outside the cities. (2.5 stars)
pro tip: Lower your expectations and roll with the experience and you may be pleasantly surprised.
hot take: Seeing the unimagined is why we travel…the hidden gems of Bali delivered more than we could have ever hoped. (5.0 stars)
pro tip: Make a plan so you can be at these sites either early or late to get to really connect with the place (instead of just tripping over other tourists). (aside from our #1, which was surprisingly empty mid-afternoon)
hot take: An easy hour’s drive South from the main tourist areas of Bali, Uluwatu delivers a more sophisticated (and expensive) take on the Bali experience. (4.0 stars)
pro tip: Renting a scooter is a must as the hills are killers, but the roads were the nicest and least crowded of anywhere in Bali.
